Closing Bell: On a volatile trading day Sensex closes marginally higher, Nifty holds 18250
Domestic equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty traded in a narrow range with bearish sentiments around the flatline in a volatile trading session on Thursday.
The Indian equity market managed to finish in green on Thursday in a highly choppy trading session. Both the domestic bourses logged their fifth straight session of gains following a seesaw action. Buying was seen in the metal and pharma names throughout the day.
At the closing bell on January 13, the Sensex was up 85.26 points or 0.14% at 61,235.30, and the Nifty was up 45.50 points or 0.25% at 18,257.80. On the market depth, around 1630 shares have advanced, 1609 shares declined, and 62 shares are unchanged.
Top Nifty gainers of the day were Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Sun Pharma, Coal India and UPL. On the losers list today were Wipro, Asian Paints, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and IndusInd Bank.
On a sectoral basis, metal, pharma, power, oil & gas and capital goods indices rose 1-3%, while bank and realty indices fell over 0.5% each. In the broader market, BSE midcap and smallcap indices ended in the green.
The trending stock of the day was Tata Steel which zoomed by 6.26% to Rs 1,219.
Also in the buzz today were the IT stocks. Heavyweights like TCS and Infosys closed in the green, and Wipro ended the day in deep red. Shares of Wipro tumbled as much as 6% to settle at Rs 649.85. The Indian IT services giant reported a subdued profit in the third quarter (Q3) of the financial year 2021-22 (FY22). Also the losses in financial and automobile shares were countered by gains in metal and pharma scrips in Thursday's trading session.
