The footwear industry in India is a very important segment of the leather industry; in fact, it is the engine of growth for the entire Indian leather industry. After China, India is the world's second-largest footwear producer, accounting for 13% of global footwear production of 16 billion pairs.

Footwear Sector production capacity

The footwear industry employs approximately 7,000 people and contributes significantly to the country's economy and foreign exchange earnings. According to the minister, nearly 40% of those employed in the sector are women, and for every 1000 pairs produced/sold, 425 jobs are created. India produces 2065 million pairs of various types of footwear (909 million pairs of leather footwear, 100 million pairs of leather shoe uppers, and 1056 million pairs of non-leather footwear). India exports approximately 115 million pairs. As a result, nearly 95% of its output is used to meet domestic demand.

Production centres of footwear 

Chennai, Ranipet, Ambur in Tamil Nadu, Mumbai in Maharashtra, Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Jalandhar in Punjab, Agra, Delhi, Karnal, Ludhiana, Sonepat, Faridabad, Pune, Kolkata, Calicut, and Ernakulam are the major production centres in India.

Global Outlook and India's Market Share

The global import of footwear (both leather and non-leather) increased by 2.1% from USD 124.43 billion in 2013 to USD 134.943 billion in 2017. In 2017, India accounted for 2% of global imports.
