A mutual fund that mimics an index portfolio is referred to as an index fund. Also known as index-tied or index-tracked mutual funds, their main goal is to follow and replicate the performance of a famous stock market index.


The Top Five Index Funds in India

Several funds are doing quite well in the Indian market. The top five index funds currently in India are:

1. Nippon India Index Fund

On September 28, 2010, Nippon India Index Fund - Sensex Plan, an Others - Index Fund, was established and is ranked 74th in the index fund category. Managed by Nippon Life Asset Management Limited, it is a moderately high-risk fund that has generated a CAGR/Annualized return of 9.9% since its inception. 

1) The returns for 2021 were 22.4%, 16.6% in 2020, and 14.2% in 2019.
2) The Net Asset Value or the NAV of the fund was Rs.29.2717 as of February 10, 2022.
3) As of December 31, 2021, the Net Assets related to the fund stood at Rs.240 crores. 
4) The expense and Sharpe ratios stand at 0.41 and 1.29, respectively.
5) The minimum investment that an investor can make is Rs.5,000, and the minimum SIP investment is Rs.100. 
6) The exit load on the fund for 0 to 7 days is 0.25%, and it is not applicable beyond seven days.

2. LIC MF Index Fund Sensex 

On November 14, 2002, the LIC MF Index Fund Sensex was launched as an Others - Index Fund, managed by LIC Mutual Fund Asset Management Company Limited. It is a moderately high-risk portfolio that has returned 13.8% CAGR/Annualized since its inception and is ranked 79th in the index fund category. 

1) The returns in 2021 were 21.9%, 15.9% in 2020, and 14.6% in 2019.
2) As of February 10, 2022, the fund's NAV was Rs.109.466.
3) As of December 31, 2021, the Net Assets related to the fund stood at Rs.47 crores.
4) The expense ratio and the Sharpe Ratio are 1.01 and 1.26, respectively.
5) An investor can make a minimum investment of Rs.5,000 and a minimum SIP investment of Rs.1000.
6) The fund's exit load is 1% for the first 0 to 1 month and it does not apply after that.

3. ICICI Prudential Nifty Index Fund

The ICICI Prudential Nifty Index Fund is an Others - Index Fund established on February 26, 2002, managed by ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company Limited. It is a moderately high-risk portfolio that has returned 15.3% CAGR/Annualized since its inception and is ranked 71st in the index fund category. 

1) The returns for 2021 were 24.9%, 15.2% in 2020, and 12.8% in 2019.
2) The fund's NAV was Rs.1 72.272 on February 10, 2022.
3) As of December 31, 2021, the Net Assets related to the fund stood at Rs.2438 crores.
4) The expenditure ratio and Sharpe Ratio are 0.45 and 1.51, respectively.
5) A minimum investment of Rs.5,000 and a minimum SIP investment of Rs.100 are available to investors.
6) There is no exit load associated with the fund.

4. UTI Nifty Index Funds

This scheme's primary investment goal is to invest in stocks of firms that make up the NIFTY 50 Index to obtain a return comparable to the NIFTY 50 through "passive" investment. The scheme replicates the index at the same weightage to reduce capital performance differences between the scheme and the index, subject to market liquidity, trading costs, management expenses, etc. 

The UTI Nifty Index Fund is an Others - Index Fund established on March 6, 2000, managed by UTI Asset Management Company Limited. It is a moderately high-risk portfolio that has returned 11.9% CAGR/Annualized since its inception and is ranked 68th in the index fund category. 

1) The returns in 2021 were 25.2%, 15.5% in 2020, and 13.2% in 2019.
2) On February 10, 2022, the fund's NAV was Rs.117.241.
3) As of December 31, 2021, the Net Assets related to the fund stood at Rs.5841 crores. 
4) The expenditure ratio and Sharpe Ratio are 0.15 and 1.53, respectively.
5) Investors can make a minimum investment of Rs.5,000 and a minimum SIP investment of Rs.500.
6) The fund has no exit load attached to it.

5. SBI Nifty Index Fund

This scheme's investing strategy is passive. The plan will invest in equities that make up the NIFTY 50 Index in the same proportion as the index to obtain similar returns by reducing the performance gap between the index and the scheme. 

SBI Nifty Index Fund is an Others - Index Fund established on January 17, 2002, and managed by SBI Funds Management Private Limited. A moderately high-risk fund, it has returned 14.7% CAGR/Annualized since its inception and is ranked 75th in the index fund category. 

1) The returns in 2021 were 24.7%, 14.6% in 2020, and 12.5% in 2019.
2) The fund's NAV was Rs.151.712 on February 10, 2022.
3) As of December 31, 2021, the Net Assets related to the fund stood at Rs.1812 crores.
4) The expenditure ratio and Sharpe Ratio are 0.52 and 1.5, respectively.
5) A minimum investment of Rs.5,000 and a minimum SIP investment of Rs.500 are available to investors.
6) The exit load associated with the investment for the first 0 to 15 days is 0.2%, and it is not applicable beyond that.
