On Monday, domestic equity benchmarks finished near the flat line, with a slight bearish tilt. Nifty fell below 16,250 points. While metal equities were heavily discounted, IT and auto companies ended the day in the black. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, fell 37.78 points, or 0.07%, to 54,288.61, according to preliminary closing data. Nifty 50 index fell 51.45 points to 16,214.70, or 0.32%.

The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index declined 0.26%, while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index fell 0.64% in the wider market. The market breadth, which indicates the market's overall health, was negative. The BSE saw 1,429 equities rise and 1,982 fall, and 166 shares remained unchanged. Inflation concerns, impending expectations of fast interest rate rises, and a weakening global economic outlook all weighed on investors' minds.

Today, the Nifty Metal index fell 8.14% to 5241.6. Over the last month, the index has dropped 19.00%. Jindal Steel & Power Ltd plummeted 17.39%, Jindal Stainless (Hisar) Ltd down 15.65%, and JSW Steel Ltd fell 13.24% among the members. Over the previous year, the Nifty Metal index has gained by 3.00%, compared to a 6.85% increase in the benchmark Nifty 50 index. The Nifty Commodities index fell 3.42% on the day, while the Nifty Auto index rose 1.84%. In today's wide market, the Nifty 50 was down 0.32% to end at 16214.7, while the SENSEX fell 0.07% to settle at 54288.61 levels.
