About Menthaoil

Mentha oil is a scented herb also known as Japanese Pudina in India. Steam distillation and filtration of dried Mentha arvensis leaves produce peppermint oil, which can be processed into menthol and other derivatives. Mentha oil and its products are widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, perfume, and flavour industries.

How are Mentha Oil rates decided?

The future rate of mentha oil depends on many things. First, you should know that the higher the manufacturing and the lower the demand, the lower the price.
Conversely, if production is low and demand is high, the price will be very high. Prices are always moderate when demand and production are in balance. The same formula now applies to peppermint oil. Based on this theory, future rates for mint oil can be easily calculated.

What are the factors that influence the Mentha Oil price?

Various factors affect the price of mentha oil. International factors affecting the price of mentha oil are the import demand from major buyers such as China, Singapore, and the United States, the dollar-rupee exchange rate, and the pricing of synthetic oil in the market.

Production-related domestic factors are climate-dependent crop yield increases and decreases at the time of sowing and gains from previous crops. Domestic demand for mentha oil by various medicine companies increases in winter. The availability of mentha oil in various forms also dictates the price.

In a way, India is driving the price of mentha oil. Of the total world production of 50,000 tonnes, India produces almost 83% of the world's output, China 9%, and Brazil 7%.

Therefore, the economics of mentha oil is virtually determined by India. About 55% of India's total mint oil exports go to China, 16% to the United States, and about 5% to Singapore. Most other countries account for a very small percentage of total mint exports from India.

As India is one of the world's leading producers of mentha oil, factors such as monsoons, growing areas, and pest incidence in the northern regions where Mentha is grown significantly impact the supply and price of mentha oil. Global demand for mentha oil and related products is strong, with developments in supply trends being a key determinant.

India currently exports almost 60% of its mint oil production, and this export share has increased steadily in recent years as the price of mint oil shows an upward trend.

The price of mentha oil, apart from the growing area and pattern, is also influenced by the supply of mentha oil available to both farmers and certified warehouses. As with many commodities, overstocking of mentha oil has a severe impact on prices.

Why should you invest in Mentha Oil?

Mentha oil is in demand all across the world. India is one of the major exporters of mentha oil. It is used for various purposes.
Prices have historically been very fickle, with spot price annual volatility hovering around 20% to 30%. In recent years, India has appeared as an export hub for mentha oil and its derivatives, exposing exporters to volatile price conditions because the existence of futures contracts allows value chain participants to hedge this price risk on exchange platforms.

Mentha Oil has seen annual price volatility of around 21% in 2019. This means a Mentha oil trader with an annual turnover of €10m.
Mentha Oil rose to 7.53% for his third straight day. The commodity has been on a broader uptrend since trading at Rs 997.60 per kg on 13th Dec. The highest rate went up to rupees 1,001.40, but with Friday's surge, mentha oil turned positive again on his 2022 calendar.

Advantages of trading in Mentha Oil

Mentha is a periodic market crop grown in the western districts of Terai and UP, mainly Rampur, Moradabad, Badaun, and Bareilly, with recent expansion to the East, including Balavanki, Lucknow, and Sitapur districts. UP is a major producer of Mentha, with 80% of India's total production, with Punjab and Haryana sharing the rest. The total area of mentha cultivation is estimated to be about 70,000 hectares, and the mint oil production reaches 14,000 MT (MT) with a market value of about Rs.700 billion.

According to the latest available estimates, production reached 32,000 MT and is projected to reach 63,000 MT. India is a major player in the global market, with an estimated export value of around Rs 150 billion. The advantages of trading in it are:

1. Mentha plays a very important role in the state's agricultural economy. The crop is economically important because it contributes to the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and because of its wide range of industrial uses in the confectionery, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries.

2. The production of mentha oil, obtained by steam distillation of mentha leaves, is a value-added activity. The seeds are usually sown in February and harvested in mid-May. This oil is a natural source of menthol, one of the most high-volume traded commodities on the Indian chemical market. Due to strong seasonal demand, it is characterised by sharp price fluctuations. Its spot market price fluctuated from Rs 350 per kilogram in June-July to Rs 650 per kilogram.

How to invest in Mentha Oil?

The charge of mentha oil within the marketplace relies upon delivery and demand; however, its delivery is incredibly managed with the aid of the OPEC cartel.

Different grades of oil alternatives beneath one-of-a-kind markets, including West Texas Intermediate (WTI) or Brent. It can also be "light" or "sweet" in nature.

From time to time, oil is visible as a portfolio diversifier and a hedge in opposition to inflation. Buying and promoting bodily oil isn't always an alternative for maximum investors. However, liquid markets that sell oil expenses may be discovered through futures, options, ETFs, or oil employer stocks.

Factors you need to consider while investing in mentha oil:

1) Demand
Demand from developed countries tends to decline when oil prices rise, but demand from growing emerging markets is expected to increase as emerging countries industrialise, regardless of oil prices. Some emerging economies have oil subsidies for consumers. However, they do not always benefit a country's economy. Because while subsidies tend to stimulate demand in a country, they can also cause the country's oil producers to sell at a loss. Removing subsidies allows countries to increase oil production, thereby increasing supply and lowering prices.

2) Supply
On the supply side, around 101 million barrels of oil will be produced daily in 2023, another new record, but oil exploration, in general, is slowing.

3) Speculation
Aside from supply and demand factors, investors and speculators bidding on crude oil futures contracts have also been the driving force behind oil prices. Many large institutional investors involved in oil markets today, such as pension funds and endowment funds, make commodity-linked investments as part of their long-term asset allocation strategies.
