The benchmark equity indices ended with slight losses. Oil & gas, pharmaceutical, and metals equities were in an uptrend.
The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, decreased 100.42 points or 0.19% to 53,134.35 as per preliminary closing data. To 15,810.85, the Nifty 50 index dropped 24.50 points or 0.15%. The market was quite volatile. Nifty rose after rising above the 15,900-point threshold and reached the day's high of 16,025.75 in the early afternoon session. However, the index was unable to maintain its gains and fell from the day's high in afternoon trade. The index fell as low as 15,785.45 in late trading but still managed to settle just above that level.

Today's Nifty Media index finished lower by 0.90% at 1901.4. The index has decreased 6.00% in the past month. Dish TV India Ltd declined 3.85%, Saregama India Ltd increased 3.24%, and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd decreased 1.76% among the members. In comparison to the benchmark Nifty 50 index's 0.15% loss during the past year, the Nifty Media index has increased by 4.00%. Other indicators include a 0.70% decline in the Nifty IT index and a 0.63% daily increase in the Nifty Energy index.
The Nifty Metal index increased by 0.30% to 4,663.75 level. The index dropped 0.99% yesterday to close at 4,649.95. The top index gainers included Hindalco Industries (1.47%), APL Apollo Tubes (1.06%), Ratnamani Metals & Tubes (0.95%), Jindal Stainless (0.95%), and Steel Authority of India (0.87%). Other winners included Hindustan Zinc (up 0.25%), JSW Steel (up 0.25%), and Tata Steel (up 0.68%). Welspun Corp (down 2.07%), National Aluminium Company (down 0.79%), and Jindal Steel & Power (down 0.62%) also experienced declines.
The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index decreased 0.35% in the overall market, while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index increased 0.20%. Market breadth continued to be positive as 1,721 shares increased while 1564 shares decreased on the BSE and 158 shares were unchanged overall. As investors anticipate the Reserve Bank of Australia's rate announcement later today, European equities fell on Tuesday while the majority of Asian shares ended the day higher.
