A steeper-than-expected rise in US consumer prices in May stoked expectations of more aggressive interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, prompting investors to flee risky assets. Inflation in the United States hit 8.6% in the 12 months ending in May, the highest level since December 1981, according to government figures released on Friday.

The Sensex, fell 1,456.74 points, or 2.68%, to 52,846.70. The Nifty 50 index fell 427.40 points to 15,774.40, or 2.64%. In two sessions, the Nifty has lost 4.27% of its value. Today's major laggards were Bajaj Finserv (down 7.02%), Bajaj Finance (down 5.44%), IndusInd Bank (down 5.27%), Tech Mahindra (down 4.84%), and ICICI Bank (down 4.46%).

The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 2.73%, while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index was down 3.15% in the broader market. On the BSE, 658 stocks rose while 2,839 declined, and 116 shares remained unchanged. The NSE's India VIX, which measures the market's anticipation of near-term volatility, increased 14.25% to 22.37.

The yield on India's benchmark 10-year federal paper increased to 7.605 from 7.519 at the close of the previous trading session. The rupee was weaker than the dollar in the foreign exchange market. The rupee was hanging around 78.13, down from 77.93 at the previous trading session's end.

Gold futures on the MCX declined 0.78 % to Rs.51,298 on August 5, 2022. Brent crude for the August 2022 settlement slid $1.60, or 1.31%, to $120.41 a barrel on the commodities market.
