The Sensex fell by 498 points, and the Nifty closes below 16,500 as IT stocks tumble.

After a volatile session on Tuesday, the domestic equity barometers finished near the day's low. The Nifty closed below 16,500 points. Shares fell across sectors, with IT, FMCG, and auto stocks falling the most. According to preliminary closing data, the S&P BSE Sensex fell 497.73 points, or 0.89%, to 55,268.49. The Nifty 50 index fell 147.15 points (0.88%) to 16,483.85.

The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 1.21%, while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index fell 1.20% in the broader market. The breadth of the market was negative. On the BSE, 1,157 shares rose while 2,168 fell and 142 shares remained unchanged. The Nifty IT index fell 2.83% to 27,418.85 points. Yesterday, the index gained 0.17% to close at 28,216.

The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper fell to 7.368 from 7.391 at the previous trading session's close. The rupee was slightly higher against the dollar in the foreign exchange market. The rupee was trading at 79.78, down from 79.7875 at the previous trading session's close. Gold futures on the MCX for the 5 August 2022 settlement rose 0.03% to Rs 50,550. The US Dollar index (DXY), which measures the value of the greenback against a basket of currencies, rose 0.60% to 107.12. Brent crude for September 2022 settlement rose $1.36, or 1.29%, to $106.51 per barrel in the commodities market. During the previous trading session, the contract rose $1.95, or 1.89%, to settle at $105.15 per barrel.

The Dow Jones futures were down 130 points, indicating that the US stock market would open lower today. On Tuesday, most European stocks fell, while most Asian stocks finished mostly higher. According to Bank of Korea estimates, South Korea's economy grew 0.7% in the second quarter compared to the first quarter of 2022. The country's GDP increased by 0.6% from January to March.
