Benchmark indices slip from one-month highs; rupee hits its all-time low.

After a tumultuous day on Monday, the major equities barometers closed with slight losses. The investor mood was negatively impacted by unfavourable global cues, continuing inflation concerns, and anxiety about significant interest rate increases. All sectoral indices on the NSE finished in the green, with the exception of the Nifty IT index.

The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, dropped 86.61 points or 0.16% to 54,395.23 as per preliminary closing data. To reach 16,216, the Nifty 50 index lost 4.60 points or 0.02%. The frontline indices underperformed the overall market. While the S&P BSE Small-Cap index increased 1.07%, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index increased by 0.63%.

After Adani's participation in the 5G auction, Bharti Airtel's stock saw the biggest drop on the Nifty. As news of the government's intention to review export duties spread, steel stocks rose. Eicher Motors is the leading Nifty gainer, with the stock closing at a four-year high. The 10-year Government Bond Yield closed at 7.43% compared to 7.42% on Friday.

Today's Nifty IT index saw a 3.08% decline to conclude at 27380.55. Over the past month, the index has dropped 6.00%. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd decreased by 4.64%, HCL Technologies Ltd declined by 4.07 %, and Coforge Ltd reduced by 2.88% in the sector. Other indexes saw daily gains of 2.70% in the Nifty Energy index and 1.97% in the Nifty Metal index.

Market breadth was strong as 2,103 shares increased and 1,318 shares decreased on the BSE and 161 shares in all remained unchanged. The US Dow Jones index futures were down 154 points, signalling a downturn in Monday's stock market opening in the US. On Monday, shares fell in Europe and Asia as investors prepared for a U.S. inflation report that would prompt another significant increase in interest rates as well as the beginning of the earnings season, which might put pressure on profits.
