The major market benchmarks posted significant gains on Thursday, closing near the day's high.  

The Nifty settled above the 16,100 barrier after hovering above the 16,000 mark throughout the day. Due to today's NSE weekly index option expiry, trading was volatile. All sectoral indices on the NSE ended in the green, with the exception of the Nifty FMCG index. Stocks of PSU banks, consumer durables, and metals were in high demand.

The S&P BSE Sensex, a gauge index, increased 427.49 points or 0.80% to 54,178.46. To reach 16,132.90, the Nifty 50 index increased by 143.10 points or 0.89%. The indices were supported by Larsen & Toubro (3.52%), ICICI Bank (2.19%), and HDFC Bank (1.79%). The domestic equity benchmarks underperformed the broader market. While the S&P BSE Small-Cap index increased 1.30%, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index increased 1.19%. 

The yield on the benchmark 10-year federal paper for India decreased to 7.356 from 7.294 at close in the previous trading session. The rupee fell against the dollar on the foreign currency market. The rupee was trading at around 79.1350 as opposed to the previous trading session's finish of 78.94. The 5 August 2022 settlement price for MCX Gold futures increased by 0.22% to Rs 50,610. The US Dollar index (DXY), which measures the dollar's value in relation to a variety of other currencies, fell 0.26% to 106.82. Brent crude for September 2022 settlement increased 86 cents or 0.85% to $101.55 a barrel on the commodities market. During the previous trading session, the contract decreased $2.08, or 2.02%, to settle at $100.69 per barrel.  

On the BSE 2,266 shares increased and 1,022 shares decreased. 150 shares were unchanged in all. The futures for the Dow Jones index were up 126 points, signalling a good start for stocks on Wall Street today. As investors read through the minutes from the Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting held on June 14–15, stocks around Europe and Asia increased on Thursday.
