Domestic indices join the global stock rout on recession fears.
Monday's market in the United States was a bloodbath. Major Wall Street indices fell on fears of lower corporate profits as a result of rising inflation. The Nasdaq Composite Index slumped by 2.26%, Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.52%, whereas S&P 500 slipped 1.15%. Twitter shares plunged over 11% after Elon Musk announced that he would terminate his $44 billion deal to buy the social media platform. Twitter said it would sue Musk to compel him to make the purchase.

Tracking the weakness from the global markets, the Indian domestic indicators opened lower. At 11:40 am, the Nifty 50 was trading at the 16,124.65 level, falling by 0.56%. On the Nifty 50 index, the top gainers were Apollo Hospitals, NTPC Ltd and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone whereas; Hindalco Industries, Eicher Motors and Titan were the top losers of the session.
Sensex was trading at a level of 54,113.67, declining by 0.52%. The top gainers were NTPC Ltd, Bharti Airtel and Wipro whereas; Titan, Tata Steel and Mahindra and Mahindra were the top draggers of the session.
The rupee weakened sharply to an all-time low of 79.58 against the US dollar. To promote global trade growth and to support rising global interest in the rupee, RBI announced the creation of a mechanism to settle international trade in rupees.
