Investors awaited data on services activity for clues about the economy and the anticipated tightening of financial conditions. The Nasdaq Composite Index soared 2.59%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.29%, and the S&P 500 advanced 1.56%.

The domestic indices lost their early gains and fell sharply, with the telecom and real estate sector suffering the biggest losses with declines of 2% each. At 11:55 am, the Nifty 50 was trading at the 17,250.40 level, dipping by 0.79%. On the Nifty 50 index, the top gainers were Hindalco Industries, JSW Steel and Cipla whereas; Tata Consumer Products, NTPC Ltd and Coal India were the top losers of the session.

Sensex was trading at a level of 57,881.77, declining by 0.80%. The top gainers were Infosys, Nestle India and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories whereas; NTPC Ltd, State Bank of India and Reliance Industries were the top draggers of the session.

In anticipation of at least a 35-basis-point increase in the interest rate to minimize high retail inflation, the Reserve Bank of India's rate-setting panel started its three-day deliberations on the next bi-monthly monetary policy on Wednesday.
